Lock Keeper's Inn to Stranmillis Weir

AntrimOut and Back

A very pleasant paddle down the Lagan River from the the Lock Keeper's Inn to the Stranmillis Weir and back. Lots of small fish, ducks and beautiful trees. You can park at Instonians Hockey Club, from there it is a short portage to the put in point which is just under the pedestrian bridge. From the car park you enter the Lagan Meadows, there is a small bridge and in front of you is Lock Keeper's Inn, to your right is a barge. Follow the towpath to the right and you will quickly see a large wooden bridge crossing the river. The put in point is below it and there is a short path to follow to the water's edge.

Additional Info

Typically a calm paddle but a few considerations. The water level can be low and the river bed is uneven so be mindful of rocks. The first 100m of the paddle is a popular angling spot so expect fishing lines and give them space. The water is not particularly clean, there is a water processing plant further upstream. The most important thing to consider is the speed of the river. At times it can pick up as you get towards the Stranmillis Weir, be mindful of this and make sure you turn around well before you get near the Weir as it dangerous.
